Today, approximately 150,000 Romanians gathered in the center of Bucharest to express their outrage against the Ciolacu-Iohannis regime, accused of canceling the December 2024 presidential elections and unlawfully clinging to power. The protest, organized at the call of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), was described as a movement for all citizens who refuse to tolerate grave deviations from democracy.

A Movement That United All Social Categories
The protest began at University Square, a symbolic location for Romanian democracy, and continued to Victory Square, where protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. Ciolacu has been accused of poorly organizing the elections, which were later canceled, sparking widespread public outrage. The demonstration culminated at Cotroceni Palace, where President Klaus Iohannis has refused to vacate his position, despite his mandate officially ending on December 21.
The crowd, made up of people of all ages and social backgrounds, sent a clear message: “We will not accept dictatorship!” and “Elections, not abuses!”
AUR Leaders: “A Protest of the People, Not the Politicians”
Although AUR organized the demonstration and made the public call, the party emphasized that this was a protest of all Romanians, not a political act. George Simion, AUR’s leader, stated: “Today is not about politics; it’s about democracy and citizens’ rights. Romanians are tired of a regime that tramples the Constitution and the will of the people.
”Marius Lulea, AUR’s vice president, added: “This isn’t about us but about the people demanding respect for the law and elections. Romania does not belong to Ciolacu and Iohannis!”
A Revolt Against an Unlawful Regime
The crowd at Cotroceni Palace condemned Klaus Iohannis’ refusal to step down, describing the situation as a usurpation of state authority. Chants of “Resign!” and “Down with the dictator!” echoed for hours as people demanded immediate elections and the restoration of the rule of law.
The protest ended with a call for unity and determination: “Romania belongs to its people, not them!” one participant declared. Organizers announced that demonstrations would continue until the Ciolacu-Iohannis regime responds to the legitimate demands of the citizens.It is clear that Romanians will no longer tolerate abuses and are calling for profound change.
